COMMUNITY GROUPS

National figures, premieres highlight Out in Akron

Akron-Out in Akron 1998, the city's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender cultural festival, begins October 10.

This second annual event is quickly becoming a significant festival in the regional community. Last year, over 800 people took part in events, and our sponsor base was nearly thirty local businesses and organizations.

This year, we anticipate 1,200 attendants and

have confirmed over 60 underwriters including

modern urban Britain. Starring Roger Daltry, Steve Bell and Ian Rose.

Film night admission is $15. Tickets are available at the door.

the Ohio Humanities Council.

Best-selling author Rev. Dr. Mel White will present a keynote speech "Holy Alliance? Religion and the Gay Community," Sunday at 2 pm at the Highland Theater. Akron area religious leaders will hold a panel discussion afterward, addressing the ways various religious doctrines impact the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community, and discussing historical attitudes of religion towards sexuality.

Gay Cultural Festival 1998

The festival will be held on Saturday and Sunday, October 10 and 11 at the Highland Theater, 826 W. Market St., Akron.

Following the success of last year's firstever event, the Out in Akron Festival aims to enlighten, educate and entertain the Akron community-gay and non-gay-through a series of cultural events including films, a humanities forum, cabaret, and nationally known keynote speakers.

Events will kick off with a public rally on Saturday, October 10 at noon in front of the

Karen Williams

Highland Theater where leaders of the local community will hold a press conference to draw attention to civil rights, employment and family issues.

Keynote speaker for the rally is Bob Hattoy, co-chair of President Clinton's HIV/ AIDS National Advisory Council and White House liaison to the Department of the Interior.

Hattoy is perhaps best known as the man who became the first openly gay, HIV-positive speaker at a national political convention when he spoke at the Democratic National Convention in 1992.

The rally is sponsored by Stonewall Akron. Hattoy's appearance is underwritten through a grant from P-FLAG, Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.

Out in Akron Film Night begins with hors d'oeuvres and cash bar in the lobby of the Highland Theater at 7 pm, with films beginning at 8 pm.

This year's first film is Fire, the latest feature film from Indian director Deepa Mehta. Stunning cinematography, intelligent acting and a captivating script have caused this film to heat up film festivals worldwide. Fire explores the forbidden and challenges India's cultural traditions. It is a "quiet, smart and beautiful film" about women in love.

Following Fire, organizers are pleased to host the Ohio premiere of Like it Is, a new film by Paul Oremland. Produced by England's Channel Four (Beautiful Thing), this English hit film has hit the American shores. It's fast-paced, gritty and humorous. Set against London's cutting edge club scene, Like it Is takes a candid look at gay life today and reflects the exuberance of

Community Groups

White is author of 16 books including Stranger at the Gate: To be Gay and Christian in America, and serves as national justice minister for Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches, the nation's only denomination with sole outreach to the gay community.

Humanities Council and National Endowment for the Humanities, with additional support from Temple Israel. Admission is free.

In addition to Out in Akron, White will be making several other area appearances to further tell his story. White will attend a clergy-only conference with the Akron Association of Churches on Friday. He will give the sermon at Temple Israel, 133 Merriman Rd., Akron, at 7 pm of Friday evening. He will be the guest at an informal supper at an open Integrity meeting on Saturday at 5 pm at Christ Episcopal Church, 3445 Warrensville Center Rd., in Shaker Heights (Cleveland).

White will also deliver two sermons at 8 am and 10:30 am on Sunday morning at Trinity Cathedral, Euclid Ave at E. 22nd St., Cleveland. These appearances are by special arrangement with Out in Akron so that White can reach the
